Jesus: The God-Man in a Barn

Last night at youth group I started my discipleship program, and Zach led songs with his guitar and Rusty had us play another crazy game...
These picures yet again reveal our church knows how to have fun (or we're just crazy): Bo in a wig and Tabitha trying to help the girls win the game BUT boys got the prize...

Holly found an old computer disk recently with a discipleship program on it I had written when in Bible College.
I was a youth director at a little church plant in Seattle. The small group of students we had were completely un-churched!
I had the privilege of sharing the Christmas Story with many of them for the first time. I couldn't believe it! Here in America, teenagers who thought Christmas was only about santa!

Anyway, I wrote this simple, back-to-the-basics discipleship program for new believers, but I believe the teens here in Rogue River need the basics too!
For the students who complete the ten-week study, we will award dog-tags on Easter Sunday...
I thought I would go ahead and share the first worsheet online...

RRAG UTH Discipleship Program
Week 1 – Jesus, The god-man in a barn

·A crib decorated with cow slobber
Luke 2:7 - And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a _________, because there was no place for them in the inn.

·A little itty-bitty town
Micah 5:2 - But you, O ____________ Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.

·Who’s Your Daddy??
Matthew 1:18-21 - Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother _______ had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an ________ of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their _______ ."

·Nasty family tree
Joshua 6:25 - But ________ the harlot, and her father's household, and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive; and she dwelt in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Genesis 27:36 - Esau said, "Is he not rightly named ________? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright; and behold, now he has taken away my blessing." Then he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"

·Regular old Name
- Jesus Name was actually Joshua, A very common name with a good meaning = “Jehovah is salvation”

·WOW! Angel broadcast, But why to smelly shepherds??
- Shepherds didn’t have the greatest reputations!!!
Luke 2:8-9 - And in that region there were shepherds out in the ________, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the ________ of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.

·Jesus weren’t no HUNK
Isaiah 53:2 - For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or comeliness that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should _________ him.

·Almost DA Ghetto
John 1:43-46 - The next day Jesus decided to go to __________. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of ____________, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of _____________?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

·Wishin for a Cardboard Box
Matthew 8:20 - And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his _______."
2Corinthians 8:9 - For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was _______, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become _______.

·If I only had a brain?!
1Corinthians 1:26-27,29 - For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were _______ according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; but God chose what is __________in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is _______ in the world to shame the strong, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

·The horrible DEATH
1Corinthians 1:22-23 - For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach _________ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles,

“His ‘cup’ was more than mere death, it was the shameful, degrading sentence that comes from carrying the sins, the crimes, the atrocities of all creation on his shoulders.”

·God, Creator of this world, became man because He wants relationship / intimacy with you! He humbled himself soooooo much, became nonthreatening and nonmanipulative. He won’t violate genuine love – He gives you the power to choose. But realize there’s a hell; there’s a heaven. We can’t afford the ticket to heaven, and that’s why Jesus became the God-man in a barn!

1John 5:20 - And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and __________ ________.
Phil. 2:5-8 - Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a __________, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.
